A European antitrust ruling appealed by Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) was upheld Wednesday, though there was a little bit of solace for the software giant.

In a case which began in 1998, the General Court of the European Union maintained Microsoft withheld code which would have allow competitor's products to interface properly with Microsoft server software.

Though Microsoft will still pay a hefty fine in the case, the fine was reduced by €39 million to €860 million, or about $1.1 billion. In total, including two earlier fines, Microsoft will end up paying about €1.64 billion over the life of the case.

The Court trimmed the fine, "to take account of the fact that the Commission had permitted Microsoft to apply, until September 17, 2007, restrictions concerning the distribution of 'open source' products."

No word on whether Microsoft will appeal the decision to the EU Court of Justice.
