India Sets Filter on Search Engines (GOOG) (MSFT) (YHOO) (FB)

February 7, 2012 9:08 AM EST
Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has agreed to remove content from its India domains which were titled objectionable by a New Delhi district court.

India’s Information Technology Act of 2008 grants the government permission to require portals to block sites and force companies to designate a point of contact for receiving those requests.

While Google said it is unable to remove information from websites owned by other companies, the company can make certain sites inaccessible through the search engine.

“This step is in accordance with Google’s long-standing policy of responding to court orders,” Google stated in an e-mail statement to Bloomberg.

Facebook (FB), Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) were also listed in the complaint files, but have all “taken the position that they don’t have control over the content found objectionable,” according to Bloomberg. The companies have 15 days to file compliance reports as the next hearing is scheduled for March 1st.
