IIJ to Establish Layer 2 Connectivity With NTT DoCoMo
TOKYO, Nov. 11, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ) (Nasdaq: IIJI) (TSE1:3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced that it has established Layer 2 connectivity between IIJ's IP network and the NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s packet network. In addition, the IIJ Direct Access, IIJ's proprietary remote access solution that creates a private connection to the corporate LAN from a mobile environment, will be accessible from terminals using the IIJ Mobile Service/Type D starting on November 24, 2009.
IIJ Direct Access was the industry's first remote access solution that provided closed network connections to the corporate LAN using existing Internet access lines. A low-cost, secure, remote access environment is created with a closed network connection between the IIJ proprietary remote access device, the ID Gateway located at the customer's premises, and a mobile terminal that uses the IIJ Mobile high-speed mobile communications service.
In the past, the only access lines available to mobile devices using IIJ Direct Access were the IIJ Mobile Service/Type E (using the EMOBILE network) and the WILLCOM PHS (user provided), but now users can also select the IIJ Mobile Service/Type D and enjoy a wider service area using a closed network connection with IIJ Direct Access.
IIJ Direct Access Highlights
* Secure LAN connections to the corporate LAN using existing Internet access lines Just like the traditional remote access VPN, a closed network connection can be created with the corporate network using existing Internet resources. By simply connecting to the network via IIJ Mobile, the ID Gateway located on the customer's network issues a private IP address to the mobile terminal. Because the terminal does not have a global IP address, it is completely divorced from the Internet environment and creates a complete remote access environment that is free from Internet-born attacks. * Security equivalent to IP-VPN and other closed-network-based remote access services, but at a lower cost Assigning only a private address to the terminal removes the threat of attacks from the Internet, providing mobile terminal security that is equivalent to CUG-based remote access, such as IP-VPN. Customers can use existing Internet access lines for remote access, enabling the use of cheap broadband access lines such as B-FLET's to access the network. This reduces monthly costs by more than 50% in some cases, when compared with traditional remote access services such as IP-VPN that use dedicated access lines. * Additional access control and terminal authentication features for a more secure service The customer's ID gateway server, which resides on the customer's network, provides detailed access restrictions for each user group. MAC address-based terminal authentication prevents access by unauthorized computers, even when those computers access the network from within the company. * Convenience Because special client software is not necessary, a closed network connection can be established with the corporate LAN easily by simply connecting to IIJ Mobile. In addition, existing network resources can be used, reducing the time required to introduce the service.
The emergence of 7.2 Mbps 3G/HSDPA mobile data communications has brought mobile applications to a wide range of industries and fields. While companies need to provide their employees with a variety of functions using remote access, they also are concerned about computer security and the potential for abuse through private use of mobile data communications. IIJ Direct Access can be used to create the ideal remote access environment, one that provides both security and lower costs through the creation of secure private access, while continuing to provide the convenience and speed that only mobile communications can.
IIJ seeks to provide its customers with the best network environment through mobile solutions.
