According to data from IDC Thursday, the worldwide smartphone market grew 65.4 percent in the second quarter of 2011.

Guess who was crowned new king? Don't strain too hard, it's the company you probably guessed first, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL).

Shipments rose from 64.4 million units last year to 106.5 million units in the second quarter. This marks the third quarter of 100 million+ smartphone shipments.

Of the total, Apple accounted for 20.3 million, all attributed to the success of it's iPhone family.

Samsung beat Nokia (NYSE: NOK) for second place, growing 380.6 percent to 17.3 million units. Nokia, in third place, reported 16.7 million shipments. Nokia was also the only major manufacturer to report a year-over-year decline in shipments, which was a dip of 30.4 percent from the second-quarter in 2010.

Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) took the fourth spot at 12.4 million shipments.

HTC rounded out the top five, growing 166 percent to 11.7 million shipments.
