HTC Looking to Buy Mobile OS Platform

Will HTC turn into the Prodigal Son?
According to Taiwan's Central News Agency, HTC's Chairwoman, Cher Wang, said that the company may be interested buying its own mobile system, a move it would make to differentiate itself from the competition. Wang said that the move wouldn't be done on a whim, though, with thoughtful research going into the move.
HTC may not be alone in the move. Though HTC CEO Peter Chou recently commented that it was a good thing, Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) proposed acquisition of Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MMI) puts the search giant in direct competition with it's partners.
Utilizing, Google's Android operating system, HTC has seen it's revenue and net income rocket higher over the past 12- to 18-months as Android gained more and more market share globally, now ranking as the number one smartphone OS according to several surveys.
HTC is free to use any OS it wants, Wang said, but that doesn't mean it has to produce an OS. HTC has made several acquisitions recently to bolster its offerings, including a $300 million acquisition of S3 Graphics to get more patent protection against Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), whom HTC is currently in litigation with.
But, will HTC be successful without Google? Most likely, HTC will continue to offer Android phones, but to a lesser extent. HTC has also loaded-up several offerings with Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone platform, though specific sales metrics for each aren't itemized.
