General Motors (GM) Doesn't Rule Out Making Changes to Volt Ion Battery
Mary Barra, senior vice president of global product development at General Motors (NYSE: GM), said Friday GM has not yet decided whether to make changes to the ion batteries currently installed in the Chevrolet Volt.
The comment follows tests from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which showed the Volt could catch fire after the battery packs were damaged. No reports of injuries have been tied directly to the fires. Management at General Motors insists the company is doing everything in its power to assure the safety of consumers. “If it’s something that we feel is important to the safety of the vehicle, we’ll find a way to do it,” reports Mrs. Barra.
Management announced earlier this week the automaker would be willing to repurchase Volt's from owners if they feel unsafe driving their Volt. General Motors has also developed a procedure to properly check the batteries status following a serious situation such as an accident.
Mrs. Barra commented, “If we learn from this process and have to make changes in the field, we will.”
