Global mobile device sales ripped 16.5 percent in the second quarter of 2011, according to new data from research firm Gartner (NYSE: IT).
Mobile sales increased from 367.99 million units to 428.66 million units.
Of the total, smartphone units increased from 17 percent to 25 percent.
Nokia (NYSE: NOK) retained its title atop overall shipments with 97.87 million in the quarter. The number is down 12 percent from the same period last year.
Samsumg was second at 69.828 million, LG third at 24.421 million, and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) fourth at 12.629 million, good enough for a 4.6 percent worldwide share. Taiwan-based HTC saw an 86 percent gain in shipments to 11.016 million.
Garter also had data on smartphone sales based on operating system. Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android gained 340 percent to 46.776 million units, making up 43.4 percent of the market.
Nokia's Symbian OS fell 6 percent to 23.853 million smartphones, while its market share was slashed from 40.9 to 22.1 percent. Apple's iOS more than doubled to 19.629 million units, and Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) saw an 8.8 percent increase to 12.652 million.
Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), recently launching Windows Phone 7 in late 2010, had a 44 percent drop, though the numbers aren't broken down between it's new OS and Windows CE (used in the failed KIN device).

I'm glad Garter supplied the author with a photo of today's smartphones.
The term needs to be redefined.
