GM (GM) Announces Plans to Make All-Electric Chevrolet Spark Mini-Car, Called Spark EV

General Motors (NYSE: GM) Chevrolet division announced it will produce an all-electric version of the Chevrolet Spark mini-car called the the Spark EV.

The new Spark EV will be sold in a select number of cities and markets around the world beginning in 2013. The company noted that it will be sold in California.

A123 Systems (Nasdaq: AONE) will supply the advanced nanophosphate lithium-ion battery packs that will power the Spark EV.

“The Spark EV offers customers living in urban areas who have predictable driving patterns or short commutes an all-electric option,” said Jim Federico, global vehicle chief engineer for electric vehicles at Chevrolet. “It complements Chevrolet’s growing range of electrified vehicles, including the Volt extended-range EV and the 2013 Malibu Eco with eAssist technology.”

Shares of GM are trading up 4.54 percent on the day to $23.52.
