May 5, 2009 9:15 AM EDT

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: CTIC) today announced that pixantrone is now available on a named-patient basis in Europe. Pixantrone will be supplied by IDIS to healthcare professionals for the treatment of individual patients with aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that has either relapsed after standard therapies or is refractory to them. We know of no therapy that has previously been shown to be effective treatment for such patients.

A named-patient program is a compassionate use drug supply program under which physicians can legally supply investigational drugs to qualifying patients. Under a named-patient program, investigational drugs can be administered to patients who are suffering from serious illnesses prior to the drug being approved by the European Medicines Evaluation Agency. "Named-patient" distribution refers to the distribution or sale of a product to a specific healthcare professional for the treatment of an individual patient. In Europe, under the named-patient program the drug is most often purchased through the national health system.

My wife and I held onto CTIC for quite some time, believing in them. As a cancer survivor, this was one stock I knew I could believe in. Their successes aren't over yet. Just wait until their meds are approved by the FDA and released in the US. By the way - from what I understand, they still have two more meds on their way to the public as well.
