Boeing (NYSE: BA) shares are indicated for a lower open Monday despite reports the company might be in talks with Air Lease (NYSE: AL) for the finalization of a massive 737 Max aircraft deal.
According to the WSJ, Air Lease and Boeing are in final talks for a deal consisting of Air Lease buying 60 Boeing 737 Max airplanes. At current prices, the deal has a book value around $5.5 billion.
This deal would a significant one for Boeing, especially, as pointed out by the WSJ, since its 737 Max program lags behind rival Airbus' A320 in terms of overall sales.
In addition to Air Lease's deal, Boeing and United Continental are in final negotiations for 100 737 Max aircraft. The two large orders, plus many more, put Boeing's backlog at 500 units.
Delivery of 737 Max units are slated to begin in 2017. Comparably, Airbus' A320 has a backlog of about 1,000 models.
