Boeing (BA) Reports Fuselage Issue with New 787; No Safety, Flight Issues Expected
Boeing (NYSE: BA) is indicated for a lower open today following reports over the weekend of fuselage issues with its new 787 Dreamliner.
Though Boeing has said there is no short-term safety concern, it is ordering inspections of 787s to inspect an incorrect assembly support within the plane's fuselage, Bloomberg noted. Boeing said the issue involved "improper shimming," which is a production issue and has nothing to do with the design.
The 787 is the first commercial airplane built mainly on carbon fiber composites.
Nippon Airways, the sole operator of the 787 right now, said it will continue to use the aircraft in daily service. Boeing also affirmed that the issue poses no flight or safety hazards.
Since inception, the 787 has been riddled with issues and delays with have added up to a 3 year lag for customers to take delivery. Boeing has since delivered two of the aircraft in January, about half-a-plane shy of its monthly production rate.
Shares are about 1 percent lower ahead of the bell Monday.
