Well, what happens if the roof equipment gets knocked off?
According to reports out Tuesday, Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) autonomous auto has passed Nevada's driving test for self-driven vehicles. The vehicle -- a modified Toyota (NYSE: TM) Prius -- is the first automobile to be licensed for legal driving in the state.
Nevada's DMV issued laws regulating autonomous cars last February. Items on the list include having a $1 million surety bond, minimum test driving of 10,000 miles (which doesn't really seem like enough), a $100 licensing fee, and more. On the plus side, the vehicles get a sweet red license plate with an infinity symbol to the left. The plate will switch to green once vehicles are out of beta testing and into consumer availability.
As mentioned above, there is a contraption on the top of the car which houses cameras and radar equipment. We'll assume the car just stops if something happens to the roof mount, which will be wonderful for traffic flow. And you know someone is going to try and knock it off.
We don't even want to think about how the car will drive if it gets an incoming call or tries to text!
