Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) announced a variety of updated iPods on Wednesday, including a touch-screen Nano model, along with a smaller and cheaper version of its Apple TV for streaming movies and television shows over the Internet onto a television.

The Apple TV experiment started in 2007 and saw very little success, as the company's chief executive officer Steve Jobs admitting that "it's never been a huge hit," adding that the previous model was too complicated for consumers.

The latest version will have its price-tag cut to $99 from $229, and will allow users to access first-run high-definition movies the day they are released on DVD for $4.99. The device will also allow streaming of HD TV shows for 99 cents.

Jobs said that the only networks that have signed on to distribute content over Apple TV are News Corp.’s (NYSE: NWS) FOX and Walt Disney Co.’s (NYSE: DIS) ABC, but added that he hoped others would join in once the device grows in popularity.

The new Apple TV will be available in four weeks and pre-orders are available now.

The new iPod Nano is a version without buttons, with a touch-screen interface to control playing, pausing and selecting files. The new model will have a built in FM tuner and the ability to display photos. The device will be offered in an 8GB model for $149 and a 16GB for $179.

The latest iPod Touch will incorporate the video-chat features similar to the iPhone 4, with a camera on the front to conduct video chats with other iPod touch and iPhone 4 users over a Wi-Fi connection. Prices for the new iPod Touch will range from $229 to $399.

The company also announced a new iPod Shuffle that will bring back the devices square shape and buttons. The lowest end media player for Apple will retail for $49.

A section called Ping will be added to the iTunes software to allow users to follow friends, musicians and others, similar to the way Facebook and Twitter work. The iTunes 10 Ping software is likely based on technology acquired when Apple bought Lala.com last year.

Jobs also announced version 4.1 of the iOS system, which will allow iPhone and iPod touch users to upload high-definition video over Wi-Fi. The new update will also add software that will allow users to take sharper pictures.

The iPad will also be getting a software update, which will allow for wireless printing in November.

Shares of Apple are up 2.88 percent to $250.08 in late market movement on Wednesday.
