Employing the usual "don't release it until it's ready technique," which has garnered it legions of fans globally, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) will allegedly miss the holiday 2011 shopping season for the introduction of it's next-generation portable device.
According to Digitimes, Apple's new MacBook Air will not debut until the first-quarter of 2012.
That may be good news to some who have been hoping to grab one of Apple's MacBook Airs, but have balked at the higher price tag. Along with typical holiday shopping deals like free shipping, many retailers are dropping the price of the outgoing MacBook Air to clear inventory for the incoming model.
According to the report: 'Online shopping site MacMall saw 11.6-inch 64GB MacBook Air drop from $999 to $939.94, while Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) is offering the same model at an even lower price of $849.99. Other models such as the 128GB version 11.6-inch MacBook Air and 128GB/256GB 13.3-inch models are being offered with a discount of $79 to $101."
Expected to compete wholly with Ultrabook offerings from rivals like Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), Acer, and Samsung, some upstream players have said that production has already started on the new, wafer-thin laptops. Despite this, Digitimes noted that Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows-based Ultrabooks will probably still me more popular in the enterprise market.
Additionally, a 15-inch model is expected to be added to the MacBook Air lineup.
