Those waiting for an Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad 3 -- both consumers and investors -- may not have much longer.
According to reports from Digitimes Friday, the iPad 3 (tentative name) will start shipping in March, and it's brethren, the iPad 4, sometime in October. Sources said the iPad 3 will have true HD display, while that iPad 4 will have "killer applications," which brings to mind some mob boss toting the device around religiously.
Digitimes notes that the iPad 3 will come with "a QXGA (1,536x2,048 pixels) display and longer battery life although its other hardware specifications may not be so amazing as expected, said the sources." For the iPad 4, a "much upgraded" hardware system with integrated apps is expected.
With the launch of the new iPad3, the pricing on the iPad 2 is expected to start at $399, making it a more attractive choice to those who might be eying an Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) Kindle Fire or other Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android-based tablet. For example, competitors like Motorola (NYSE: MMI), Samsung, and Sony (NYSE: SNE), price their tablets at $359 or more.
As noted Thursday, Google is also expected to launch a branded tablet in the second-quarter of 2012, probably April, though nothing has been confirmed yet. Also, the second-half of 2012 will see heightened competition as Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) debuts its Windows 8 platform, and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) is expected to release its Clover Trail-W platform, Digitimes noted.
Early Friday, shares of Apple are indicated for a stronger open.
