Amazon (AMZN) Won't Beat iPad, But Will Light Other Android Tabs on 'Fire'

September 28, 2011 7:26 AM EDT
Amazon.com's (Nasdaq: AMZN) new kindle media tablet -- codenamed 'Fire' -- will be good, but not an Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad killer.

According to Digitimes, which cites industry sources Wednesday morning, the Fire will take down many of its Android brethren. Priced at $250, the Fire is half the cost of Amazon's iPad, and leagues below some other tablet PCs currently on the market.

Quarterly sales are expected to initially be at three million units.

Reports also have the Fire having a similar appearance to Research In Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) PlayBook, but remember, in tablet world it's what's under the surface that really matters. Inside is a Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) CPU with Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android 2.2 mobile OS.

Amazon is up over 1 percent pre-market Wednesday, hours ahead of the expected news about the Kindle Fire.
