January 27, 2012 12:33 PM EST
29 international shipments of oranges have now been detained by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after testing positive for illegal fungicides.

In the most recent reports, the FDA detained eight out of 80 shipments of oranges as tests indicated they contained concentrations of 10 parts per billion or higher. Two other shipment were halted voluntarily by manufacturers.

A spokesmen for the agency stated, “FDA is confident that orange juice in the United States may be consumed without concerns about its safety due to the possible presence of such residues.”

Originally the fungicide, carbendazim, was only found in shipments from Brazil, but now the band fungicide has been found in shipments originating from also Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Honduras, Lebanon, Mexico and Turkey, according to Bloomberg.

The U.S. is the largest importer of orange juice as it brought in 190,000 metric tons last year alone. The nation consumed 1.2 million gallons between 2009 and 2010.
