Last weekend's ticket-sales winner was the film
Gravity, which has received an 8.7 out of 10 possible stars on IMDB.com, with 37,000 votes having been cast. Given that the film is also available to view in 3-D, will Panasonic, Sony (NYSE: SNE), Vizio, and others venture back into the world of 3-D TVs that tried to fire-up when
Avatarwas released back in 2009?
Many manufacturers and panel-makers were banking on
Avatarjump-starting the 3-D TV revolution. However, subsequent holiday sales saw that the market wasn't ready and its now a rarity to find a 3-D for sale at a Best Buy (NYSE: BBY), Wal-mart (NYSE: WMT), or other location. People just don't like wearing glasses while watching something in the comfort of their homes, we guess.
Should
Gravitycontinue to do well (and it should this weekend given continued hype surrounding the film), watch out for manufacturers to revisit the idea of in-home surround viewing. It might be a boon for retailers (amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN), eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY), Target (NYSE: TGT)) not to mention LG Display (NYSE: LPL), Sharp, AU Optronics (NYSE: AUO), and others.
Keep an eye on IMAX Corp. (NYSE: IMAX) and Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) as
Gravitycontinues to perform well.
