Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) executive chairman Eric Schmidt was speaking at AllThingsD "D: Dive into Mobile" event today, issuing a few positive comments on the world's most-popular mobile operating system, Android.
Most were concerned with Facebook's (Nasdaq: FB) recent debut of its Home UX, which will be the first thing users see when installing the program on their compatible device. Some speculated that, due to Facebook taking the Google search bar off of the home screen and putting most Google features in the background, that the search giant wouldn't be happy about the program. Schmidt basically elaborated on a recent statement from Google that it was okay with Facebook's modifications.
Schmidt crowed about the "openness" of Android and how Facebook and CEO Mark Zuckerberg didn't even need to work directly with Google to make Home UX a reality. Further, Schmidt noted that being open source is what Android is all about and, pending the developers stick to guidelines that Google lays out, the possibilities for development are endless.
Schmidt also said that Motorola, which was acquired by Google last year, is developing some pretty "phenomenal" products. Though he didn't elaborate on the types of product, Schmidt simply said that consumers should think of the upcoming devices as "phones plus."
Schmidt commented that about 1.5 million Android-based devices are being activated everyday.
It should be noted that Google is planning to release quarterly results after markets close on Thursday. Shares are up about 0.7 percent in morning trading.
