Trade in Your Old Tablet at Wal-Mart (WMT) and Get the New iPad Air at a Discount

October 24, 2013 3:06 PM EDT
Walmart (NYSE: WMT) announced that it is adding tablets to its store trade-in program. Similar to its new smartphone trade-in program, customers can now trade in their tablets at more than 3,600 Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations nationwide. Customers can receive up to $300 for their current tablet, which will then be applied toward the purchase of a new tablet.

Walmart also confirmed that it will sell the new Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) Wi-Fi iPad Air for $479 at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, Nov. 1. This is below the suggested retail price of $499. The company also said it will sell the iPad Mini for $399 when it's available, in-line with Apple suggested pricing.

Walmart is also rolling back the prices on current iPads effective immediately:
  • iPad with Retina Wi-Fi 16GB will rollback for from $499 currently on rollback for $449 down from $499
  • iPad Mini Wi-Fi 16GB will rollback from $329 to $299
  • iPad 2 will be sold at $399

Walmart's tablet trade-in program started on Wednesday, October 23.

The value of the trade-in tablet will be determined based on the following questions on its condition and specifications:
  • Does it power on?
  • Is the display fully functional and free of dead spots?
  • Is the tablet and display completely free of cracks?
  • What is the wireless carrier?
Once the customer accepts the offer, the trade-in value will be applied to a new tablet of their choice. If a customer’s new tablet costs less than the trade-in value of the old tablet, he or she will receive the balance on a Walmart gift card.
