Sony (SNE) Looks for Living Room Market Share with New PS Vita TV (AAPL) (GOOG)

September 9, 2013 11:49 AM EDT
Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) are seeing another entrant looking to control living room entertainment.

Sony (NYSE: SNE) debuted its PlayStation Vita TV today, which should start around 9,480¥ ($95) and there will be a bundle which includes a DualShock 3 controller and 8-GB memory card for about $143.

The PS Vita TV will run Vita, PSP, and PlayStation 1 games and will also be compatible with PlayStation 4 upon the consoles release.

Largely, the PS Vita TV might be considered competition for Apple TV, though Google recently introduced its Chromecast device which allows for streaming and control of content from an Android-equipped device or PC. The key advantage that Sony has here is the ability to offer gaming.

With Sony expected to launch its PlayStation 4 in Japan months after its launch in North America, some might suspect that the PS Vita TV would be introduced in Japan sometime ahead of the holiday season.

Shares of Apple, Sony, and Google are all positive today.
