Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) shares are on "watch" Friday following reports that Samsung might be one of the first major consumer electronics makers to the smartwatch game.
Bloomberg today said that Samsung will debut its wrist-mounted device -- dubbed the "Galaxy Gear" -- in September. The device will be able to make phone calls, handle email, and have Web access. It will run on the Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android operating system.
Sales of the device are expected later this year, though a price wasn't speculated.
Despite recent hints to the opposite, the Galaxy Gear won't have a flexible OLED display on it.
The debut will be on the same day as Samsung's unveiling of the Galxy Note 3.
Last February, it was mulled that Apple had about 100 engineers working on a smartwatch device of its own. Not much has been heard since then, save for an interview by Apple CEO Tim Cook at AllThingsD's D11 conference this year, when he hinted at a wearable device and that the wrist was a logical place to put one.
Shares of Apple are up in early trading.
