Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is going to play a little defense with the next variation of its Nexus 7 tablet.
Digitimes reports on Thursday that Google's next-generation tablet will be available in retail channels starting in July, with an expected price of $229. The price comes as some expected the company to implement a price cut to compete in the low-cost tablet segment.
However, Google is planning to maintain its position as a leader in the $199 to $249 tablet market, while names like Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) trying to gain broader share in the 7-inch to 9-inch display tablet market.
In the low-end segment, Samsung is expected to gain a dominant position, while there will also be offerings from Acer and ASUStek. The entry-level segment is defined as tablets priced at-or-below $199, though a competitive low-cost tablet might be below the $159 price level.
Shares of Google are indicated lower Thursday morning.
