Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) is planning to shutter the last of its data centers and move everything over to the public cloud.
The WSJ noted that Netflix's move to shut down its last data center has been years in the making. The company is moving its data to Amazon's (Nasdaq: AMZN) Amazon Web Services (AWS).
In a statement to the WSJ, Netflix commented, For our streaming business, we have been 100% cloud-based for customer facing systems for some time now, and are planning to completely retire our data centers later this summer.
Moving to a full-public-cloud operation is rare for large companies, with most keeping resources in data centers or private clouds. Some use a combination of the three, which is referred to as a "hybrid arrangement.
Shares of Netflix are indicated higher in early trading Friday.
