April 7, 2014 11:05 AM EDT

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is looking to move beyond just software and games as it looks to gain more affection from the U.S. consumer.

According to Bloomberg, the next move for Microsoft when it comes to media and entertainment might be television. Recently-hired Nancy Tellem, president of entertainment at the company (pictured at left), will oversee production on original content for the Xbox gaming console (titles will be produced via the Xbox television studio).

Microsoft has six programs nearing completion and dozens more in the pipeline, according to reports. Release of initial shows is slated for this June.

Competing for users attention include Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX). Both have established original content programs, which have garnered a slew of industry accolades, setting a high bar for Microsoft to reach. Additionally, Amazon release Fire TV just last week as it looks to basically push more Amazon Prime memberships, which will lead to more sales of media content and other items.

Shares of Microsoft are up 0.3 percent, shrugging off broader market moves.
