What's the best way to get Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 8.x into tablet users' hands? Combine it with Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android.
That's just what ASUStek is attempting to do. At 2014 CES, the company announced its TD300 tablet, which runs both operating systems. Pressure from Google has delayed launch of the device, but there is no word that ASUStek plans to scrap the tablet entirely.
Digitimes noted that, along with Microsoft, the tablet should be a boon for Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) and PC vendors. The TD300 can only run with Intel's x86 chip due to its ability to support both operating systems.
ASUStek runs the risk of offending both Microsoft and Google in releasing the tablet, but will probably appease Intel, which is one of the company's main partners for 2014. That partnership includes better pricing and marketing support.
It's not expected that other manufacturers will go with the dual-OS tablet setup; many will probably wait and see the reaction from Google and Microsoft before moving forward with such an offering. Given the openness of Android, it's likely Google would be more lenient on ASUStek given the breadth of offerings the OEM has. It's also highly unlikely that manufacturers would attempt to pair Apple's iOS with any other mobile operating system.
Shares of Microsoft are flat in early trading Friday.
