HTC Aims at Peers With New Mobile Device OS

August 28, 2013 8:33 AM EDT
HTC is planning to make it harder for the likes of Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Samsung to gain market share in China.

According to reports out Wednesday, HTC is developing a mobile operating system directed at the Chinese consumer. The OS will have integration of Chinese-specific apps, like Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) Twitter-like microblog Weibo.

China has also been pushing for wane itself off of the reliance of Western-developed operating systems like Android. Last March, the government published a white paper touting development of a domestic OS, while praising companies like Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) and Alibaba, which have created their own systems.

It wasn't made clear whether HTC's OS would be fully proprietary, or run atop Google Android. Timing for launch of the devices, which are currently being tested by the Chinese government, is also uncertain.
