HBO might be looking to trim the price of its HBO NOW service as it looks to gain more of the streaming content market share.
According to TechCrunch, citing CutCableToday.com, HBO is sending out survey gauging different pricing schemes for HBO NOW. The service currently runs $15/month, which is notably higher than Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), at $9/month, Hulu, at $8/month, or Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), which runs $8.25/month for its Amazon Prime service.
Reports have HBO testing pricing packages such as $29.99 for three months ($9.99/months), $59.99 for six months ($9.99/month), and $99.99 per year (about $8.33/month).
While those plans would offer a significant discount to the current HBO NOW rate, it should be noted that is more challenging to get consumers to pay a larger sum up front versus paying month-to-month, which is a challenge Amazon has been dealing with for a number of years.
Shares of Netflix are down over 1 percent Tuesday.
