Google (GOOG) Sees Notable Jump in YouTube Mobile Revs, Thanks to Apple (AAPL)

June 6, 2013 11:31 AM EDT
Ad revs are showing a marked increase for Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) YouTube, led in large part by its mobile device app.

And Google should be thanking Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) for the opportunity.

9to5mac pointed out today that Apple's decision to exclude the ad-free version of Google's mobile app last year may have added to the search giant resubmitting an ad-enabled app to Apple's App Store months later.

In an interview with Bloomberg, YouTube VP of Sales Lucas Watson said YouTube ad sales have tripled over the last six months to $350 million. Watson also noted that about one-quarter of YouTube users access the site via mobile apps, meaning ads were more important than ever.

Nielsen data also has about 70 million U.S. users accessing YouTube via mobile app in March, up 42 percent over the prior year.

EMarketer sees mobile ad sales hitting $2.69 billion by 2017, up 10-fold over last year's number.

Shares of Google are up modestly Thursday.
