Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) is said to be looking to take additional market share away from Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG)(Nasdaq: GOOGL) YouTube platform with the addition of music videos.
According to the NY Times, Facebook has been in talks with record labels over the last few weeks with respect to the initiative. Discussions are said to be preliminary.
Facebook is looking to add a limited number of the videos, which would be chosen by the labels, to users' news feeds. Facebook would share ad revenue with the labels, though specific terms haven't been set.
News comes as Facebook was rumored to be in talks with music labels over the last few weeks, with tentative market speculation pointing to a potential streaming music service. Facebook reps subsequently denied that the company would start offering that sort of service.
Shares of Facebook are positive in early trading.
