Executive Key for Intel's (INTC) Push Into Pay TV Leaves Company

April 22, 2013 8:21 AM EDT
Just months before launching a pay TV service, reports out Monday have a key executive at Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) leaving the company.

GigaOM says Intel's Jim Baldwin is no longer with the company. He served as Vice President of Engineering at Intel Media and joined the company from Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT).

Intel Media chief Erik Huggers commented in February that Intel's pay TV services was privately testing in three markets, with debut expected before the end of 2013. Losing a key person in the segment might push the launch back a little, but no word on whether the 2013 launch has been compromised.

News of the move comes following dismal Q1 results reported last week.

Along with a rumored smartphone, pay TV is expected to help Intel diversify revenue streams from chips over the next few years. The company is making the transition as its CEO, Paul Otellini, is departing the company soon, leaving a void in leadership just when Intel needs it most.

Shares are indicated slightly higher early Monday.
