BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY) said to enter a deal with Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN), according to WSJ headlines. The deal covers access to Amazon's Appstore for mobile devices.

Update -

The deal is expected to be announced late Wednesday night.

BlackBerry will gain a wider offering of music, video, games, and other mobile apps with the deal. The aim is to make the company's smartphones more appealing to consumers, while it works to beef up its security offerings for government and enterprise customers.

BlackBerry has about 130,000 apps, but is missing key ones from companies like Pintrest, Netflix, Groupon, and more. Amazon has access to these apps and boasts a catalog of around 240,000 total apps, which would bring BlackBerry's offerings up to 370,000 apps.

By comparison, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) have over one million for App Store and Google Play, respectively.

Notably, Amazon is also expected to release its own smartphone today, which will run on the Google Android platform. It will be interesting to see if the company hints at a BlackBerry partnership at the event.

Shares of BlackBerry are indicated higher Wednesday.
