AMD (AMD) Slips Two Spots in Global MPU Sales for 2012; Intel (INTC) Drops Share

While Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) has handily remained atop the list of microprocessor (MPU) sales in 2012, one notable name saw a decent slip down the ladder.
Research from IC Insights has Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) moving from second in 2011 down to fourth last year. Moving up to second was Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM), while Samsung took third spot.
MPU sales for Intel fell 1 percent to $36.992 billion, while is market share moved 2 points lower to 65.3 percent. Qualcomm had 9.4 percent of the market, Samsung was at 8.2 percent, and AMD came in with 6.4 percent (down from 8.2 percent in 2011).
AMD will be one of the first MPU suppliers to start selling microprocessors with X86 and ARM architectures starting in 2014. The MPUs will be used in server computers.
Shares of AMD are down 0.3 percent Tuesday.
