Rumors of the new iPad Mini may be true, but don’t expect it to be smaller than a normal iPad.
Brian White, an analyst with Ticonderoga Securities, noted in a report Wednesday morning that back in October of 2010, Steve Jobs mocked tablet makers for offering a 7 inch tablet. Jobs said providers should ship sandpaper with their device so users could file down their fingers to use the device.
White believes the new iPad may be released within the first few months of 2012 and target a more “price sensitive” market. The decision follows a tour of meeting with component suppliers in China and Taiwan. The new tablet is expected to compete with the likes of Amazon’s (Nasdaq: AMZN) Fire tablet as many believe the device will be priced in the mid to high $200 range.
The new iPad Mini is not a substitute for the iPad 3, White said. He expects the iPad 3 to be launched in the second quarter of 2012. Amazon is also expected to launch a new and more powerful Fire tablet around the same time.
White notes Apple may have plans to address emerging markets with its lower cost iPad, but will not do it at the sacrifice of quality or size.
