Sonus Networks (Nasdaq: SONS) shares are higher on the session amid trader sentiment that a little more work might be coming its was from a large U.S. telecom.

Northland Securities' Catharine Trebnick said that Verizon (NYSE: VZ) was adding Sonus' session border controllers (SBC) to its New York-Boston link in an effort to adjust to increased IP traffic. She thinks it would be a "mild positive" for Sonus moving forward.

Peer Acme Packet (Nasdaq: APKT) is seeing some unusual downside as some speculate that Verizon might shift controller suppliers, though Trebnick believes the Sonus deal wouldn't be a negative for the company.

Shares of Sonus are up over 2.5 percent while Acme Packet shares are 5.2 percent lower Thursday afternoon.
