Memry Corporation (AMEX: MRY) 65.5% HIGHER; SAES Getters S.p.A., Italian Group and Memry today announced that they have agreed on a merger plan, which has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies. Under the terms of the agreement, the deal is valued at approximately $77.7 million. SAES Getters will acquire 100% of the equity of Memry Corporation. All Memry shareholders will be entitled to receive $2.51 in cash per share for each share of common stock. The price per share represents a premium of approximately 73% based on Memry's closing price as of June 23, 2008.
Gold Reserve (AMEX: GRZ) 35.2% HIGHER; as Gold Reserve's two major properties are located in the same region, Bolivar State, Venezeula, as Crystallex's Las Cristinas project, the stock is feeling a boost today from the announcement that the Las Cristinas Environmental Permit will be reconsidered.
Uranium Resources (Nasdaq: URRE) 23.9% HIGHER; continues to trend higher today after bouncing on Friday. The stock is up more than 80% since Thursday's closing price. Shares are also seeing extremely heavy volume today: the stock has already traded more than 3 million times, compared to its average daily volume of 719,000 shares.
comScore (Nasdaq: SCOR) 22.4% LOWER; reports Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) will offer a service to measure web site usage, Google Trends.
CenturyTel, Inc. (NYSE: CTL) 18.4% HIGHER; boosted its annual cash dividend to $2.80 from $.27 per share. The company also declared a one-time dividend of $.6325 per share, payable on July 21, 2008, to shareholders of record on July 7, 2008. CenturyTel also said it will accelerate purchases under the current $750 million share repurchase program to complete the remaining balance of approximately $385 million by year end 2008 or early 2009. The Company also expects to meet or exceed its previously announced second quarter 2008 operating revenues and diluted earnings per share guidance, excluding nonrecurring items, of $647 to $657 million and $.78 to $.82, respectively.
Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) 14.7% HIGHER; announced today that its Board of Directors has authorized a stock repurchase program totaling as much as $1.0 billion of the company's outstanding common stock. At recent prices, the purchase of $1.0 billion of Kodak stock would represent approximately 25% of the shares outstanding.
Virgin Mobile (NYSE: VM) 11.6% LOWER; today announced that it will unveil its new "Totally Unlimited" calling plan for $79.99 on July 1, the lowest priced and first unlimited nationwide calling plan without roaming charges or an annual contract that can be purchased by cash or credit. The stock was also downgraded by Pali Research from Hold to Sell.
ExpressJet Holdings (NYSE: XJT) 10.9% LOWER; the airline sector has been nose-diving recently amid record high crude oil prices and a need for cost-cutting measures within the industry. While several major airlines are down substantially today, ExpressJet is leading the sector lower.
Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. (Nasdaq: SSCC) 10% LOWER; shares are sinking despite no negative news released from the company. However, an exec, Mike Oswald, is presenting at the 9th Annual Paper Recycling Conference & Trade Show in Chicago and investors could be viewing his comments as negative. Notably, shares of Domtar (NYSE: UFS), another large company in the paper & paper products sector, are down more than 6% today.
UPS (NYSE: UPS) 4% LOWER; lowered its Q2 EPS guidance from $0.97-$1.04 to $0.83-$0.88, versus the consensus of $0.97. UPS said, "Slow U.S. economic growth and an unprecedented increase in the cost of fuel have resulted in lower-than-expected U.S. package volume and an accelerating contraction in the use of premium air products. In addition, the anemic U.S. economy is negatively impacting package volume into the United States, affecting results for the International segment. Performance in the Supply Chain & Freight segment is continuing to exceed expectations."
