William Blair analyst, Jason Ader, noted Mobileye N.V (NYSE: MBLY), BMW, and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) announced a collaboration to bring highly and fully autonomous driving into series production by 2021. The companies anticipate creating two platforms, with both being available in 2021. The first is a highly autonomous vehicle (classified as level 3 autonomous), which permits the driver to disengage under certain conditions on the highway. The second platform is fully autonomous (level 5), which will not require a human in the vehicle. The second platform will likely initially be a ride-sharing fleet in geofenced areas in select urban settings. The first platform is expected to have high volumes, while the second platform, due to the ride-sharing nature, will likely be low volume. The platforms are part of BMW’s iNEXT program.
