Cramer: First Solar (FSLR) is a Play on Obama

July 8, 2008 3:19 PM EDT

As T. Boone Pickens was on CNBC this morning promoting his much-anticipated wind power plan, Jim Cramer stuck to the theme and highlighted several alternative energy picks on this afternoon's segment of Stop Trading!.

One play was First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR), which Cramer has stuck by despite a more than 15% sell-off since mid-May. Cramer attributed weakness in First Solar over the last few months to insider selling, but believes that the stock will come back, especially if Obama is elected into office.

Shares of First Solar were in the red much of today, but have moved into positive territory heading into the last hour of today's trading session. The stock most recently traded around $258, up about $1 from yesterday's closing price.

Cramer continued by pointing out that Obama is solar, while McCain is nuclear. Cramer thinks that if McCain is chosen as our next President, investors should get into Shaw Group (NYSE: SGR).

First Solar, Inc. designs, manufactures, and sells solar electric power modules using a proprietary thin film semiconductor technology.

DRILL OFFSHORE ASAP !!!
Lee on Aug 1, 2008 07:13 PM

First of all, we don’t even know if the ‘other things’ that are supposed to bring us alternative energy will be cost effective, or even work. However, I agree that we must move forward with development of alternative energy ASAP … but, in the meantime, this entire country runs on oil. And, I’m not just talking about us consumers at the pump, I’m talking about how everything we use, eat, wear, etc. … how it all gets to market, and eventually to us. We have to drill more, if even as a transition until alternate fuels are developed, But, aside from the cost at the pump for consumers, the bigger issue still is our national security. Drilling oil on our own land insures us energy independence, which will stop us from total dependence on countries who don’t like us … and from countries we’ve been sending tens of billions of dollars to every year. We must drill ASAP. The politicians who tell you different are simply placing petty party politics above the prosperity and security of America. Obama’s policies are just one example of what can happen when a bunch of inexperienced, but exuberant followers blindly follow an inexperienced, incompetent charismatic leader, who thinks he’s the second coming, off the cliff. Hunger is not enough of a justification to eat the goose that lays the golden eggs … or, eventually everyone will starve. If Obama, with his socialistic redistribution of wealth scams wins, America will turn into a third world country, with massive company closures and unemployment, within a few years.

edit: $5/gallon gas, not oil

Reality?

yes the US is dependent on oil, and yes we do need to break this habit soon. however, pointing the finger at "Big Oil", is a total cope out. if you really believe that oil drilling is being talked about so much right now bcuz the oil companies are pushing politicians bhind the scenes in order to make huge profits (oil is NOT a high margin industry), then you have got another thing coming. its called supply and demand, craig, and if you dont want to believe that then u will get a whack of reality in the next year or 2 -- when oil makes its way past $5/gallon and u r begging for those oil companies to start drilling

Gimmicks galore -- more drilling & gas tax exemptions!

I wish the "more drilling" knuckleheads would think a little bit before biting on the latest Big Oil gimmick to prolong America's dependency on oil. Right now, oil companies are sitting on 100 million acres of leased territory for drilling and only working 20% of it. Why the call for more drilling? Because Big Oil wants to bank more leases before their puppet-men Bush & Cheney leave the White House. And the gas tax holiday is a total joke. This is a 100% use fee that is used to maintain & construct roadway infrastructure. The next time some knucklehead starts talking about the latest Big Oil gimmick, give him or he a whack of reality!

betting on dispair

Both of these bets are reasonable, but they both amount to betting in a card game on a train car while heading off a cliff. The nation is going to pay a heavy price for accumulated policy mistakes by congress dating back 25 years on drilling bans, finger pointing, and win-the-day politics. This is also a bet on the dumbest part of American policy and economic literacy. The nation that put men on the moon and dominated post world war growth is headed for the skids along with Mexico with its own brand of a constitution-driven drilling ban.
