Canaccord Genuity Morning Coffee on Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT): No more blue screens?

Microsoft unveiled a near-final test version of its Windows 8 operating system on Thursday and the company said is hoping to have it released before the year-end holiday season. Windows president Steven Sinofsky said in a blog that if all goes as planned, PCs with the system installed should begin shipping by year end. Windows 8 will be Microsoft’s first to run on chips based on ARM Holdings’ (NYSE: ARM) technology and the first for touch screen devices. This will help Microsoft compete in the tablet market which is currently dominated by Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) software solutions. Establishing a position in the tablet market is important for Microsoft as rising tablet sales have cut into the sales of PC’s and laptops, subsequently hurting sales of the Windows operating system. Sinofsky said that based on the feedback the test version has received, Microsoft will move towards the next milestone, release to manufacturing, where manufacturers begin putting the software on their devices. The company hopes to enter that phase within the next two months.
