Microsoft reported its Q3 results after the close on Thursday, with earnings topping consensus while revenue matched the Street. Earnings came in at $0.78 per share on revenue of $20.9 billion versus the average analyst estimate of $0.76 on $20.9 billion. Microsoft Office continued to be strong with corporate customers while sales of Windows 7 have slowed in anticipation of the PC and tablet compatible Windows 8, which is due later this year. The company has been busy partnering with PC makers and smartphone manufacturers such as Nokia (NYSE: NOK) as it looks to expand its footing and fend off rivals Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG). Sales of Windows dropped 6.3% from the prior year while profit in the division fell by 11.0%. The entertainment division, which is responsible for the Xbox video game console saw sales increase by 15.0% while its online services division, which includes the Bing search engine saw revenue climb 10.0%. Currently, Bing is the second-most popular search engine in the U.S., lagging only Google.
