Barclays on U.S. Media: NFL Ratings Soar, But So Do Rights Fees
Analyst, Anthony J. DiClemente, said, "Football dominates ratings, as the NFL seeks higher fees - NBC's Sunday Night Football (7.4 rating/ 18 share) finished on top of the ratings in the primetime, 18-49 demographic, followed by ESPN's Monday Night Football (5.6 rating/ 15 share) in the #2 spot. As football continues to dominate the ratings, the Sports Business Daily reported this week that the NFL is seeking 60%+ increases in rights fees from its broadcast partners, CBS (NYSE: CBS), NBC, and Fox (Nasdaq: NWSA); this following ESPN's (NYSE: DIS) recent renewal, where pricing reportedly jumped to $1.9B from $1.1B annually, an increase of over 70%. Even though games are getting increasingly expensive, we believe the networks have little choice but to renew, since outsized NFL ratings are crucial for promoting other network programming and justifying higher retransmission consent fees from MSOs."
