Barclay's on U.S. Entertainment: TV Ratings Rundown Weekly
Barclays analyst says, "Dancing with the DVRs - ABC (NYSE: DIS) posted solid network ratings growth of +3.9% Y/Y in week 3, the best of the majors and a stark improvement from a ratings decline of -8.7% Y/Y in week 2. While the network didn't increase its number of shows in the top 25, Grey's Anatomy (4.6 rating/ 13 share) and Modern Family (4.6 rating/ 12 share) both jumped from 7th to 3rd place in a 3-way tie with Fox's hit show Glee. Notably, ABC's Dancing with the Stars was the most watched show on television in week 1 with over 22 million viewers, as measured by the recently-released Live +7 day data, which takes into account 7-day DVR playback. As consumers increasingly turn to DVRs and on-demand to watch TV, we believe the Live +7 day data is an important indicator of a program's overall success."
CBS (NYSE: CBS) adds 2 shows to make legion 13 strong - Adding to its dominant position, CBS increased its number of shows in the top 25 to 13 from 11 in the prior week. Newcomers included 15th ranked 60 Minutes, which benefited from the NFL
audience in the preceding time slot, and crime-drama The Mentalist, which was
ranked 25th.
Fox, NBC bring up the rear - Network ratings at Fox (-0.3% Y/Y) were roughly flat for
the week, despite two episodes of Hell's Kitchen making the top 25 for the first time
this season in the 23rd and 25th spots. With a 3.5 rating and 6.0 share, 4th place
Fox still has a sizeable gap to close on NBC (4.8 rating/ 8.5 share). Ratings at NBC
grew +3.4% for the week, despite only one original program appearing in the top 25,
The Office, which moved up one spot from the prior week to 17th place.
Winners & Losers - For the week ended October 10th, MTV (+63.1% Y/Y) had the
fastest growth of all the cable networks, followed by Investigation Discovery (Nasdaq: DISCA) (+52.3% Y/Y), and Travel Channel (+39.6% Y/Y). Surprisingly, Discovery Channel ratings dropped sharply by -17.7% Y/Y, pulling down DISCA's overall ratings growth to only +2.3% Y/Y, the first time DISCA has posted less than double digit ratings growth in the past 13 weeks.
