With sales of Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad Air beginning today, investors want to know: how many will the company sell?
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has an idea. In a note issued earlier today, Munster thinks Apple will sell anywhere from 2.5 million to 3.5 million in its first weekend.
While the numbers might seem like, making a comparison to last years launch of the fourth-generation iPad is tough given that those numbers included preorders and sales of the then-new iPad mini tablet.
Additionally, unlike last year, Apple is launching the iPad Air in 42 countries at once, whereas last year's launch targeted just 27 countries in its opening weekend.
But, Munster's numbers could be a boon for investors; the analyst was modeling initial iPhone 5s and 5c sales of 5 million to 6 million units in its first weekend, while Apple actually reported selling around 9 million units globally. Again, the latest iPhone line had a much broader launch than its predecessor.
While investors might look for upside to Munster's numbers (maybe to the tune of 5 million units?), many might still be waiting on the launch of the iPad mini 2, which is yet to be confirmed by Apple.
Shares of Apple are down 1 percent Friday.
