American Public Education (APEI) Affected by Army Tuition Assistance Changes

Do to fiscal challenges, the U.S. Army announced effective March 8th new U.S. Department of Defense voluntary education Tuition Assistance enrollments will be suspended until the fiscal situation "matures". The Air force may also suspend tuition assistance, following up on the Army decision and a similar decision by the MarineCorps recently.

The changes were pointed out by analysts at Wells Fargo, and they say it threatens two stocks, American Public Education (NASDAQ: APEI) and Bridgepoint Education, Inc. (NYSE: BPI).

"APEI faces the greatest threat, in our opinion, as 40% of its student population consists of active duty military but BPI also faces meaningful risk as well," said analysts.

Shares of American Public Education closed at $32.29 yesterday, with a 52 week range of $24.88-$42.17.
