EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC), under recent activist pressure, is considering merging with a rival, according to reports late Sunday from the Wall Street Journal.
EMC and HP (NYSE: HPQ) held on-again off-again talks over the past year, although those talks recently ended without a deal. EMC and privately-held Dell also held talks, according to the reports, although deal-size would possibly be a problem for Dell.
Analysts also point to a possible deal between EMC and Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) or Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL).
Meanwhile, activist investor Elliott Management wants EMC to spin-off its large and valuable VMW (NYSE: VMW) stake.
JPMorgan is advising EMC, the Journal reported.
